As EVEN the most casual observer of the sports world must admit, the racing of Thoroughbred horses under saddle has undergone a most tremendous expansion in the United States in the past ten or fifteen years.

Racing and betting on the races have been made legal and have been instituted in many states that never hoped to see a horse under silks; new tracks have been opened and have enjoyed heavy patronage and most conspicuous success; there are now many more days of racing in a year than formerly; and the total amount of money wagered on the runners, both on-course and off-course, has reached staggering and almost astronomical proportions.

You may like it or you may lament it, but you cannot deny the bare fact that racing has become an important factor in the public finances of many states as well as the most conspicuous single phenomenon of the world of sports.

Granting that racing has arrived with a fanfare of trumpets, and that it is here to stay so far as any human being can foresee or predict, I wish to explain just what I am going to try to do in the pages that follow.

To many thousands, racing-or rather betting on the races-is merely a vice.

Strangles Infection in Horses

If you love horses and presently have one or more, you should always be on the lookout for infections. One of the most serious of these infections is the strangles infection in horses. This is also known as horse distemper . It is a highly contagious upper respiratory tract infection caused by Streptococci equi. It is said that most horses develop an immunity to this infection once they have had it. However, this may not always be the case, so you should always keep an eye on the horses medical condition. Should one of your other horses develop strangles infection in horses, do not think that just because your other horse had it previously that it is now immune to this disease. This fact cannot be stressed enough.

Some early signs of strangles infection in horses to look for include fever, heavy nasal discharge or swelling of the lymph nodes under the jowls and throatlatch area. The infection is spread to other horses by shared feed or any direct contact. In any case, keep the infected animal away from all the others until this has been resolved. The infection can occur in horses of any age but in general occurs more frequently between the ages of 1 to 5 years of age. Talk to your vet any time you think this may be happening in one of your horses.
